An update on wetland and waterfowl mapping in northwestern Ontario

June 5, 2019

Thunder Bay, ON: Ducks Unlimited Canada recognizes that natural resource development is on the increase in the boreal region. Reliable knowledge is the foundation for sustainable land use and we’re preparing detailed wetland maps for the Canadian boreal region, making it possible for companies to strategically prioritize conservation in management planning and field operations.

About the project

Ducks Unlimited Canada provides partners with valuable tools for working in and around wetlands while supporting our conservation goals. Our mapping and wetland vegetation experts work with forestry companies and other industry partners to improve wetland maps and provide guidance on planning that takes wetlands and waterfowl into consideration.

About the product

This fact sheet provides an update on progress in wetland mapping, habitat classifications and waterfowl habitat spatial assessments in northwestern Ontario’s boreal region. Waterfowl in the boreal are found at low densities throughout a vast landscape. Understanding wetland type, extent and ecological characteristics allows integration of habitat conservation into land use decisions.
